Researching the Berlin oracle bonesA new method using special photography by Xiaona Zhi

This short documentary is now part of the visual installation at the exhibition "Narrative Material: New Perspectives on Literature" at the Dahlem Research Campus.

The term "literature" usually brings to mind the printed book. "Story Material" invites us to broaden our perspective: Using six selected exhibits – including Chinese oracle bones, a pair of Japanese folding screens, and a Syrian graphic novel – literature is presented as lived practice and aesthetic experience.

Visitors can explore the diverse ways in which objects tell stories or inspire storytelling, how narratives change over time, and how literature is disseminated and transmitted as a material and oral practice. Different scholarly, curatorial, and conservation approaches continually open up new perspectives on the objects and their cultural contexts. The exhibition showcases objects related to literature, thereby illuminating the diversity, materiality, and cultural embeddedness of literature.
